KARACHI, Pakistan (TheSportsNEXT) November 19, 2012: Former Pakistan skipper Shahid Khan Afridi has cancelled his contract with the Big Bash League franchise Melbourne Renegade after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) allowed him as well as the other two Pakistani cricketers to take part in the KFC Big Bash League 2012.
-->

Shahid Afridi’s latest decision to refuse the PCB permission to play in the KFC Big Bash League has the potential to put a crack in relations of the PCB authorities and the flamboyant all-rounder who has been in the center of major controversies with the cricket board.

Earlier on Monday, the PCB chairman Chaudhry Zaka Ashraf allowed three Pakistani cricketers Shahid Afridi, Saeed Ajmal, and Umar Akmal to participate in the KFC Big Bash League 2012 after receiving a formal request by the Cricket Australia for inclusion of the international cricket stars in its domestic Twenty20 cricket league.

Cricinfo reported Monday that the Pakistani players will leave for Australia after playing in group stages of the local Twenty20 tournament and will miss out on the final phase of the event.

The KFC Big Bash League is swinging into action on December 7 and Pakistani players will have to return home by December 12 when the camp for the tour to India will commence. As per the arrangement, all the three players will be available for only one game to their Big Bash League franchises.

KARACHI, Pakistan (TheSportsNEXT) November 19, 2012: After a request by the Cricket Australia, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday allowed three Pakistani cricketers Saeed Ajmal, Shahid Afridi, and Umar Akmal to enjoy a short stint at the KFC Big Bash League 2012.
-->

The permission will mean that the three top Pakistani cricketers will miss the final stages of the local Twenty20 tournament which runs in parallel with the Australian Twenty20 competition.

The decision is also to the contrary of the PCB’s earlier stance of saving its cricketers from injuries ahead of the all-important tour to India. PCB selectors will also be going through their previous statements where they had made it mandatory for the top cricketers to make sure their presence in the domestic T20 competition to be picked for the India tour.

The top quality trio will return home for the conditioning camp in Lahore for the India tour but will miss the major part of the country’s domestic Twenty20 competition.

It is important to mention here that Saeed Ajmal is associated with the Adelaide Strikers, Shahid Afridi signed up with Sydney Thunder after transferred from Melbourne Renegades, while Umar Akmal is due to represent the Sydney Sixers in the KFC Big Bash League 2012.

Talking to local media on Monday, a PCB spokesperson said that the decision was reversed after receiving a request by the Cricket Australian and the three Pakistani cricketers will miss the final stages of the local T20 tournament to be part of the KFC Big Bash League franchises for a brief period.

ICC Objection results in renaming of World XI as International World XI

KARACHI, Pakistan (TheSportsNEXT) October 17, 2012: Sindh Sports Minister, Dr. Syed Mohammad Ali Shah, on Wednesday, changed the name of World XI to International World XI after the International Cricket Council objected on the name.

The ICC spokesman, Samiul Hasan told local media, “The ICC doesn't permit the names World or World XI for exhibition matches”.

A letter has been sent to the Pakistan Cricket Board in this regard, he added.

A Pakistan Stars XI led by Shahid Khan Afridi will take on International World XI led by former Sri Lankan legendary captain Sanath Jayasuriya in two Twenty20 matches to be played at National Stadium Karachi on October 20 and 21.

Cricketers from West Indies, South Africa and Afghanistan are participating in the two Twenty20 matches which would be the first time since March 2009 that international cricketers would tour any part of Pakistan.

In the first major international cricket event in Pakistan in more than three years, the Pakistan Cricket Board has already allowed the event organizers to use National Stadium Karachi and also let its centrally contracted players to participate in the matches.

Shahid Afridi amid toughest time of his international cricket career

KARACHI, Pakistan (TheSportsNEXT) October 13, 2012: Former captain of Pakistan cricket team Moin Khan said Friday that struggling top all-rounder Shahid Khan Afridi should take a brief break from the game after a disappointing ICC World Twenty20 2012.

Boom Boom Afridi: Will He Strike Back?
Shahid Afridi had a nightmarish ICC World Twenty20 2012 where he seldom scored runs and lacked confidence in his bowling as he was belted for runs while he also failed to regain his in-drift which used to trouble batsmen in the past.

While cricket experts like Dr. Nauman Niaz and Younus Khan are of the belief that a surgery on his back has stopped him from bending it the way he used to which is why he can’t find his drift into the right-handers but his recent slump in form has surely something to do with his mental state and of course a rift in the team.

Shahid Afridi led Pakistan to very much a similar result in the 2011 ICC World Cup what Mohammad Hafeez produced but Afridi had to leave the captaincy for his great work after the then coach Waqar Younis found disliking for him and he along with the then manager hatched conspiracies against the hard-hitting all-rounder which eventually forced Ijaz Butt to remove him from captaincy.

Lala needs confidence from his fans
Since then, Shahid Afridi has been in and out of the national cricket team but the BoomBoom resurrected his career last year when he rocked Sri Lanka in United Arab Emirates and since then he had been producing match-winning performances for Pakistan consistently.

However, when you talk about Pakistan cricket, you always know you’re talking about politics. Only when Shahid Afridi started producing massive performances, a group in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which doesn’t like Afridi in the team, started a new wave of conspiracies which disrupted his concentration as he was made to fight on two battlefields.

The increased pressure of performance in a cricket team which lacks quality players kept gaining size for Shahid Afridi and the extra pressure of dealing with the haters in the board put him to the sword and he started finding it tough to keep his consistency in the field.

Not a lot of people were in favor of Shahid Afridi’s inclusion in the ICC World Twenty20 side and they kept doing their bit to get the Boom Boom out of the squad but he somehow managed to get a place for him.

Should Lala Take A Break From Cricket?
A lot was expected from Shahid Afridi but politics in the dressing room kept dismantling his psyche and he found it tough to perform in the field as fielders looked less-enthusiastic to stop boundaries off his bowling while he didn’t get some decisions in his favor which added fuel to the fire.

In recent years, Shahid Afridi has extracted confidence from his bowling rather than his batting and when he found little support by his teammates off his bowling, naturally his batting got affected and he lost his touch with the bat, scoring a series of Ducks.

In such dire circumstances, Moin Khan’s advice has just the right idea for Shahid Afridi who needs some time with his family and friends to think about his future and his game as he needs to work it out in the nets.

Can Boom Boom bring back smiles on his fans' faces?
Moin Khan rightly disagreed with the repeated calls of international retirement for Shahid Afridi and said that the flamboyant all-rounder should continue playing international cricket as he still has plenty of cricket left in him.

"I don't think he should retire. I sincerely believe he can still serve Pakistan cricket for a few more years. All he needs to do now is take a break from the game, spend some time with his family and come back before the India tour fresh and confident," Moin stated.

Disagreeing with the people suggesting Afridi to call it quits, Moin Khan said, “I don't agree with this notion. Afridi is clearly short on confidence while batting and this is affecting his overall performance. He needs to take a break and regain his focus because he remains a valuable player for Pakistan”.

KARACHI, Pakistan (TheSportsNEXT) October 4, 2012: The first semi final of the ICC World Twenty20 2012 will be played between 2009 world champions Pakistan and the then finalists Sri Lanka in Colombo on Thursday (today) and it would be cracker of a game as both teams have some of the finest bowling talent in their ranks.

Sri Lanka might have a little edge on fast bowling department with Nuwan Kulasekara, Lasith Malinga, Thisara Perera, and Angelo Mathews all are in very good bowling form and are enjoying good record against Pakistan; especially Thisara Perera, who was the star performer during Pakistan’s tour to Sri Lanka earlier this year.

On the other hand, Pakistan are struggling in their fast bowling department as their premier bowler Umar Gul is facing the worst time of his international career and has shown no control whatsoever on his deliveries.

In absence of quality fast bowlers, Pakistan will have to heavily rely on their spin bowlers who bowled 18 overs in their last Super Eights contest against Australia.

The big worry for Pakistan, apart from their vulnerable batting, is the form of their star bowler Shahid Khan Afridi, who has been off-color since last two months and is yet to justify his place in the squad. He is due for his big performance as he had won Pakistan the matches on his own in the past and his record against Sri Lanka is also very impressive. The stage is set for Boom Boom Afridi to fire today as all cricket lovers and fans of Lala are expecting BIG EFFORT from him in this crucial match.

Despite of an in-form pace bowling attack, Sri Lanka still have something to worry about as their spinners have not come up with huge performances consistently. Their premier spinner Ajantha Mendis who, after taking six wickets against minnows Zimbabwe, hardly made an impact in the Super Eights matches. He was thrashed by Samit Patel of England in their last Super Eights match.

The encouraging sign for Sri Lanka is the impressive performances of their back-up spinners Jeewan Mendis and young Akila Dananjaya as both took five and four wickets in the tournament, respectively.

The cricket lovers will be watching a very evenly-contested semi-final today as Sri Lanka will look to take revenge of their defeat in the 2009 final to the hands of Pakistan while on the other hand Pakistan will want to improve their WT20 record by qualifying for the final this year after their horrible defeat in 2010 T20 World Cup semi-final against Australia.

KARACHI, Pakistan (TheSportsNEXT) October 4, 2012: Pakistan and Sri Lanka are locking horns in the first semi-final of the ICC World Twenty20 2012 at R Premadasa Stadium on Thursday.

If we analyze the performance of Pakistani and Sri Lankan batsmen in the ICC World T20 2012, we will see that Sri Lankan batsmen have utilized the home advantage and have been playing better cricket than Pakistani batters.

Sri Lankan team will heavily rely on their skipper Mahela Jayawardene in the all-important semi-final against Pakistan as Mahela is among the top five run-getters in the ongoing ICC World T20 with 168 runs at an average of 42.

Dilshan is also in the list of top runs scorer with 144 runs while another Sri Lankan star Kumar Sangakkara, who boasts an excellent record against Pakistan, is also in good form these days as he scored 130 runs in the event.

On the other hand, the youngster Nasir Jamshed is carrying the burden of batting for Pakistan as he has scored 144 runs in the event with two fifties. It is important to mention here that in Pakistan everyone is criticizing Imran Nazir for his poor batting performance but he is the second best batsman for Pakistan in the ongoing T20 world cup with 133 runs and has the best strike rate among the Pakistani batsmen with 164.19 runs per 100 balls.

Pakistani skipper is also in decent form these days as he is the third in the list of top runs-scorer for Pakistan in the event with 122 runs. Umar Akmal has also shown promised with the bat as it seems that he has been given the task to finish the match for Pakistan and he scored 96 runs with healthy average of 48 in the tournament.

All in all, it would be a great contest between both teams but Pakistan batting is always a worry and its unpredictability may cost them the match here.

It is also pertinent to mention here that, Pakistan also have to be wary of Sri Lankan late middle order batsmen like Jeewan Mendis, Thisara Perera and Angelo Mathews who are using the long handles rather effectively during the ongoing ICC World T20 2012.

Not to forget that Sri Lankan top order batsmen Mahela, Sangakkara and Dilshan are very good batsmen of spinners and Pakistan cricket team has the best spin attack in the world but they were exposed against India but it will be a new game altogether and pressure will be more on the batsmen as compared to bowlers because losers will be kicked out of the event, so Pakistan will have the advantage and one can predict that Shahid Khan Afridi and Saeed Ajmal may prove decisive in the all-crucial semi-final game.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (TheSportsNEXT) September 25, 2012: It was one of those luckiest days when Pakistani batsmen raised their game to clinch victory for the nation and what a day they chose to steal the limelight as Pakistan needed their heroics badly enough to book a place in the Super Eights stage of the ICC World Twenty20 2012.

It was Imran Nazir’s day in Sri Lanka who, for the first time in the tournament, unleashed his big hitting abilities to the optimum as he smashed all Bangladeshi bowlers all across the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium and achieved a highly important victory for Pakistan.

Imran Nazir hit 72 aggressive runs from just 36 balls at a strike rate of exactly 200 runs per 100 balls as he cruised to the ICC World Twenty20 2012’s fastest fifty from only 26 balls and eclipsed Chris Gayle’s record of hitting fast half century from 25 balls earlier in the tournament.

It was a day meant to break many records for Pakistan as Imran Nazir’s strike of 200 runs per 100 balls was the second-highest for a Pakistani batsman for a half century. Umar Akmal tops the list with strike rate of 206.45 runs per 100 balls when he smacked Australia in 2010 during his 64 runs innings.

Pakistani batsmen also made a new record of chasing down their highest target ever in Twenty20 International cricket beating their previous best of 165 against Australia in 2007.

Imran Nazir and skipper Mohammad Hafeez amassed 124 runs for the opening wicket partnership which is their second best opening wicket partnership in Twenty20 Internationals. Interestingly, the top two opening stands have come against Bangladesh and the top opening stand of 142 runs was scored during the 2010 ICC World Twenty20.

Another interesting statistics about the match was that the match’s cumulative run-rate of 9.12 was the seventh highest for those World Twenty20 matches which had over 30 overs bowled. It is also the second highest match run-rate in a World Twenty20 match involving Pakistan after that 2010 ICC World Twenty20’s semi-final between Pakistan and Australia.

Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim won the toss and decided to use his batting might to leave Pakistan with a massive chase in a bid to expose a vulnerable Pakistan batting line-up which is not renowned for chasing down totals.

Bangladesh looked desperate right from the word go and openers Tamim Iqbal (24 from 12 – 5 fours at strike rate of 200) and Mohammad Ashraful (14 from 13 – 3 fours at strike rate of 107.69) got their team off to a flying start scoring 34 runs for the opening wicket from just 3.2 overs.

Bangladesh’s tactic of promoting Shakib Al Hasan up the order at one-down position once again paid huge dividends as he used his bashing skills to the optimum to score 84 runs from only 54 balls with the help of 11 fours and two sixes. He scored his runs at a strike rate of 155.55 runs per 100 balls which is the fourth-highest for a fifty-plus score by a Bangladesh batsman in Twenty20 internationals.

A stupid mix-up between Shakib and Tamim put an end to a promising innings of the left-hand opening batsman as Pakistani skipper Mohammad Hafeez ran like Usain Bolt to clip the bails before he could make his ground.

Bangladesh were two down for 61 runs in the sixth over and were looking good to score a huge total after a decent launch-pad provided by the opening batsmen.

Skipper Mushfiqur Rahim joined former captain Shakib and both batsmen added 68 more runs into the total from 53 balls before medium pacer Yasir Arafat got rid of the right-hander for 25 from 26. The Bangladesh captain mostly played a second-fiddle role in the partnership and hit only one boundary and as many six during his innings.

Shahid Afridi soon got rid of Mahmudullah for a duck but Nasir Hossain (16 from 13 – 2 fours) and Shakib Al Hasan took their team’s total into a formidable position with some late hitting as Bangladesh scored impressive 175 for six from their 20 overs, their best total against Pakistan.

Bangladesh hit a total of 22 boundaries and three sixes during the course of their innings and scored 61/2 from their powerplay overs besides scoring 39/2 in the last five overs.

Apart from Shahid Khan Afridi and Yasir Arafat, Pakistani bowlers looked all rusty and scrappy as skipper Mohammad Hafeez went for 28 from his three, Sohail Tanvir went for 25 from his three for a wicket, while Saeed Ajmal went for 32 from his four overs. The worst bowling figures for Pakistan were achieved by fast bowler Umar Gul whose short-pitch bowling on a batting friendly pitch earned him figures of 0/43 from three overs, his worst bowling figures in Twenty20 Internationals.

Pakistan had come into the 2012 ICC World Twenty20 with the pride of having the world’s most lethal bowling attack but their fast bowlers have lost sheen a little bit and have leaked a lot of easy runs which should be a point of concern for the team management.

Shahid Afridi bowled his best spell of bowling in recent months as he went for only 20 runs from his four overs for a wicket, while Yasir Arafat captured three wickets for 25 from his three overs. Mohammad Hafeez failed to utilize his bowling resources rather judiciously as despite of leaking 29 runs from his earlier two overs, he preferred Umar Gul over Yasir Arafat in the death overs which showed his lack of awareness of his available resources and how they had performed earlier in the game.

However, Mohammad Hafeez made up for his captaincy blunders with the bat as he along with Imran Nazir (72 from 36 – 9 fours, 3 sixes) scored 124 runs for the opening wicket from just 81 balls thus taking the game away from Bangladesh.

Just like Bangladeshi captain Mohammad Hafeez (45 from 47 – 6 fours) played a second-fiddle role in the partnership as Imran Nazir unleashed his big shots brutally and mustered the Bangladeshi bowlers with no mercy.

When Imran Nazir was removed by Abul Hasan, he had taken Pakistan on road to victory already but skipper Mohammad Hafeez followed him in the same over to deal Pakistan a double blow.

Nasir Jamshed (29 not out from 14 – 2 fours, 2 sixes) and Kamran Akmal (22 not out from 15 – 4 fours) showed no signs of panic and took Pakistan to 178 for two from 18.4 overs as the Men in Green achieved the target with eight balls to spare.

Expectedly, Shakib Al Hasan, the only quality player in Bangladeshi side, was the star performer with the ball as well as he gave away only 23 runs from his four overs while Abdur Razzak also bowled rather miserly for figures of none for 30 from his four. All the other bowlers were belted hard by Pakistani batsmen as Mashrafe Mortaza (3-0-30-0), Shafiul Islam (2.4-0-35-0), Abul Hasan (3-0-33-2) and Mahmudullah (2-0-24-0) looked unimpressive.

Imran Nazir was declared Man of the Match for his brilliant knock of 72 from 36 balls as Pakistan have joined South Africa, Australia and arch-rivals India in Group 2.

Pakistan will play their next match against South Africa on September 28, before taking on arch-foes India on September 30, and then will face off against Australia on October 2, 2012.

Man of the Match: Nasir Jamshed of Pakistan

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (TheSportsNEXT) September 23, 2012: Pakistan started their ICC World Twenty20 2012 (ICCWT20) campaign on a winning note on Sunday when they defeated fighting New Zealand by 13 runs at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

Victory was attributed mainly to brilliant individual performances by Nasir Jamshed, skipper Mohammad Hafeez, and Saeed Ajmal.

Pakistan scored 177 for six from their 20 overs and then restricted BlackCaps to 164 for nine despite of late charge by their skipper Ross Taylor.

Pakistan skipper Mohammad Hafeez won the toss and decided to bat first on a placid batting track at Pallekele and soon he along with Imran Nazir (25 from 16 – 5 fours) started confidently. Only when Imran Nazir started looking solid he offered a caught-and-bowled chance to Tim Southee who accepted it gracefully to leave Pakistan 47/1 in the 6th over.

However, left-hand batsman Nasir Jamshed (56 from 35 – 2 fours, 4 sixes) stormed his way into the crease and make a solid impact on the game as he blasted two outrageous maximums over extra cover position off New Zealand spinners.

Pakistan added 76 runs for the second wicket before skipper Mohammad Hafeez (43 from 38 – 2 fours, 2 sixes) misjudged a length delivery from James Franklyn and lost his stumps as he looked for quick runs to up the run rate in the 14th over.

The dismissal of captain put pressure on the incoming batsmen and Kamran Akmal (3 from 3) found it tough to make himself at home in the center and soon Nasir Jamshed followed him.

Only when it all started to look falling apart for Pakistan, Umar Akmal (23 from 15 – 3 fours, 1 six), Shoaib Malik (9 not out from 7 – 1 four) and former skipper Shahid Afridi (12 from 6 – 2 fours) delivered the final punch as Pakistan raced to a formidable total of 177 for six from their 20 overs.

Tim Southee was the most successful bowler for BlackCaps as he went for 31 from his four overs and took two wickets. All-rounder Jacob Oram also captured two wickets but gave away 44 runs from his spell. Veteran left-arm off-spinner Daniel Vettori once again proved his worth in the side as he gave away only 23 runs from his quota for a wicket while James Franklyn bowled only one over and grabbed the prized scalp of Pakistani skipper for seven runs.

Interestingly, fifth bowler proved quite an expensive choice for New Zealand as they used three bowlers to bowl four overs where Nathan McCullum (2-0-23-0), Adam Milne (1-0-12-0), and James Franklyn (1-0-7-1) combined went for 42 runs.

Since the pitch was assisting batsmen more than bowlers, the chase was always on and young New Zealand openers Rob Nicol (33 from 28 -3 fours, 1 six) and Kane Williamson (15 from 13 – 2 fours) gave them a confident start by putting on 53 runs for the opening wicket.

Shahid Afridi came to rescue Pakistan yet again as he got rid of dangerous-looking Rob Nicol before a combination of Nasir Jamshed and Mohammad Hafeez caught Kane Williams short of his crease.

New Zealand’s most explosive batsman Brendon McCullum (32 from 31 – 4 fours, 1 six) was still at the crease but skipper Ross Taylor made a surprising move of promoting Daniel Vettori (18 from 16 – 1 four) up the order at two-down position.

The two batsmen added 48 runs for third wicket before Saeed Ajmal hunted Vettori as his first scalp of the evening.

With pressure of huge asking run-rate mounting on Kiwi batsmen, McCullum tried to step out of the crease against fast bowler Umar Gul who fired one into the block-hole and inside edge rolled on to the stumps to end a little cameo of the Kiwi wicketkeeper.

Saeed Ajmal soon got rid of all-rounder Jacob Oram (11 from 7 – 2 fours) but New Zealand were still looking strong in the run-chase as the ball was coming nicely on to the bat.

BlackCaps skipper Ross Taylor (26 from 11 – 3 fours, 1 six) came to the crease and played a blinder as he helped the New Zealand to get closer of the target and James Franklin (13 from 6 – 1 four, 1 six) also hit a fabulous maximum off Sohail Tanvir to make it an interesting thrilling game but both lost their wickets in 18th and 19th over respectively.

New Zealand needed 21 runs from the last eight balls but limped to 164 for nine from their 20 overs, falling 13 runs short of the target as their hopes of qualifying into the next stage hinges on Pakistan vs Bangladesh match scheduled for September 25, 2012.

Skipper Mohammad Hafeez once again proved an economic option for Pakistan as he went for only 15 runs from his four overs but star of the show was Saeed Ajmal who once again reminded the International Cricket Council of his sheer class by taking four wickets for only 30 runs. Shahid Afridi also bowled well and exhibited glimpses of regaining form as he captured a wicket for 30 runs.

Pakistan’s worries remained in the fast bowling department as Umar Gul, Yasir Arafat and Sohail Tanvir all went for plenty collectively going for 84 runs from their eight overs. On the other hand, Pakistan’s spinners once again saved the day as they collectively leaked only 75 runs from their 12 overs.

Opening batsman Nasir Jamshed was declared Man of the Match for his fluent innings of 56 runs.

KARACHI (TheSportsNext) September 5, 2012: Pakistan’s star all-rounder Shahid Khan Afridi is dejected after severe criticism by cricket fans and former cricketers and is pondering his options and is likely to announce a very important announcement about his career after returing home, TheSportsNext.com has learnt.

As per the sources, Boom Boom Afridi is under stern stress following huge criticism by not only the fans but also from Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) authorities and team management therefore he is making up his mind for something big.

Sources told this scribe on Wednesday, “Shahid Afridi talked to some of his close friends whom he usually introduces in media as his Buzurgs (elders). He asked for their advice about his international career and most probably he will announce a very important announcement in coming days".

They added, "Afridi also discussed the stress which he is facing nowadays by the team management and senior colleagues in the Pakistani team”.

It is important to mention here that Shahid Afridi has scored just 177 runs in his last 15 matches in four different series and tournament and got just 10 wickets in these matches which resulted in a huge wave of criticism.

"Yes! It is absolutely right that Shahid Afridi is under stress because of criticism. Management thought Afridi is not fit for batting slot and in the presence of Mohammad Hafeez and Saeed Ajmal it’s quite difficult to fit him in spinner slot too", the sources said adding, “Some of the senior cricketers also joined former cricketers and advised him that he must take a break from the game".
