Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell save the day for England on final day

By Ashley Williams

LONDON, England (TheSportsNEXT) December 17, 2012: England have done it, and they have done it in great fashion as they played out the whole fifth day in Nagpur against Indian spinners on a spinners-friendly pitch which for some unknown reasons stopped helping spinners.

The Nagpur Test ended in a draw but victories in Mumbai and Kolkata after losing in Ahmedabad made sure England won the series by 2-1 to break the 28-year drought of winning a Test series on Indian soil.

When both skippers called it stumps on final day of the Nagpur Test, England had scored 352 for four in their second innings with Ian Bell (116*) and Joe Root (20*) at the crease.

Jonathan Trott and Ian Bell were the last England players to shine on Indian soil and they came good exactly when their country needed them the most to fire as the two batsmen constructed the biggest partnership of the whole Test series, i.e. 208 runs.

Jonathan Trott scored 143 runs from 310 balls in an innings that lasted for 405 minutes as the stylish batsman hit 18 boundaries to save the day for England who needed to survive Indian spinners to keep their 2-1 advantage in the series.

Trott was equally matched in performance by Ian Bell who resurrected his Test career and silenced his critics by scoring his first Test century in sub-continent as he remained unbeaten at 116 runs from 306 balls hitting 16 boundaries and a six during 403 minutes long innings.

England skipper Alastair Cook was declared Man of the Series for his mammoth stockpile of runs while James Anderson was named Man of the Match for his heroics with the reverse swinging cherry.

KOLKATA, India (TheSportsNEXT) December 6, 2012: Skipper Alastair Cook led England into a commanding position on second day of the third Test against India at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

At stumps on day 2, England scored 216 for the loss of opening batsman Nick Compton but not before scoring 165 runs for the opening wicket with his skipper Alastair Cook who surged on top of the list of English batsmen with most number of Test centuries.

This is third straight century for the England captain in the current Test series against India and he once again led his side into a position of relief after India were bowled out for 316 runs earlier in the day.

Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (52 from 114 – 5 fours, 2 sixes) did strike a fighting half century but lacked support from the other end as he became the last man to fall in the Indian innings.

Fast bowler James Anderson was on top of his game as he finished with three for 89 runs but star of the show was once again offspinner Monty Panesar who collected four wickets for 90 runs. Graeme Swann and Steven Finn also took a wicket apiece for 46 runs and 73 runs, respectively.

James Anderson was exceptional with his use of old ball as he made the ball talk with an impressive mixture of reverse swing and short-pitch deliveries. Indian lower middle order and tail-ender batsmen had no answer to quality bowling by English bowlers as they could add only 43 runs for the loss of four wickets.

England are now in command of the Kolkata Test as they are just 100 runs behind India’s first innings total and they have nine wickets in hand. Especially, they have their man with the best form Alastair Cook in the middle while the other in-form batsman Kevin Pietersen is yet to step into the field.

MELBOURNE, Australia (TheSportsNEXT) December 6, 2012: England Test captain Alastair Cook and Kevin Pietersen are closing in on becoming the English batsman with most number of Test centuries.

Alastair Cook, a left-hand opening batsman, has been producing the goods with the bat for England in the four-match Test series against India as he showed the fight in the first match which England lost by nine wickets before he along with Kevin Pietersen led the visitors to a marvelous 10 wickets victory in the second Test.

Alastair Cook has now 22 Test centuries to his name and there are four other English batsmen who have scored this many centuries in Test cricket including Hammond, Kevin Pietersen, Cowdrey, and Geoffery Boycott.

Both Alastair Cook and Kevin Pietersen are in tremendous form in the current Test series against India and have shared the batting workload immensely as they led England to 10 wickets victory in the Mumbai Test which squared the series at 1-1.

Former England captain Andrew Strauss, who was left with no option to culminate his Test career after the Kevin Pietersen disgrace during South Africa series, scored 21 centuries for England. Barrington and Graham Gooch hit 20 Test tons while Hutton had 19 and Michael Vaughan scored 18 centuries during their illustrious Test careers for England.

MUMBAI, India (TheSportsNEXT) November 19, 2012: India defeated England in the first Test by nine wickets at Sardar Patel Stadium in Motera on Monday.

England’s resilience ended in the opening session when they were eventually all out for 406 runs as skipper Alastair Cook made 176 runs while wicketkeeper-batsman Matt Prior hit 91 runs for the visitors.

Indian batsmen then raced to victory for the loss of wicket as they chased down the target of 77 runs from 15.3 overs.

Cheteshwar Pujara was declared Man of the Match for a brilliant double century.

The two teams will now move to Mumbai which will host the second Test at the Wankhede Stadium from November 23. The third and fourth Test matches of the series will be played at Kolkata and Nagpur from December 5 and December 13, respectively.

At stumps on day four, England had reached 340 for five and it all looked like an intriguing day of Test cricket on final day of the Ahmedabad Test but England batsmen failed to keep prolonging misery on the Indian bowlers as they could add only 66 runs to their overnight tally before losing the last half of the side.

The collapse left India with a paltry target of 77 runs which was never enough to challenge the Indian top-order batsman who scored 80 for one from 15.3 overs as the home side wrapped up a comfortable victory with half a day in hand.

Chasing 77 runs for victory, Indian openers Virender Sehwag and Cheteshwar Pujara scored 57 runs in only 9.5 overs before Viru was dismissed for 25 runs. Cheteshwar Pujara remained the man to get out for England bowlers as he came unbeaten at 41 while Virat Kohli (14 not out) hit the winning runs.

This is the first victory for India at Ahmedabad in the last seven years and they had to work hard for their dominance especially in the second innings when Alastair Cook and Matt Prior refrained from bowing down to Indian spinners.

The last time India had won at Motera was in December 2005 when they had defeated Sri Lanka here. Collectively, it was India’s fourth victory in Ahmedabad in 12 Test matches and their fifth in the last six Test matches played on home soil.

Apart from Cheteshwar Pujara, left-arm off-spinner Pragyan Ojha also played a major part in the victory for India as he captured the two dangerous men Cook and Prior in the space of 12 balls to dent England chances on the final day.

Pragyan Ojha captured nine wickets in the match for 165 runs as he grabbed five wickets for 45 runs in the first innings before adding more sheen to his performance by taking four wickets for 120 runs in the second innings.

Losing captain Alastair Cook told the presentation party, “We can look at a number of reasons why we didn't win, but our first innings wasn't good enough. It was a great fightback, there was a glimmer of hope, but it always had to be something special. We'll work hard going into Mumbai. The pitch got slower as the game went on. We need runs in the first innings, they are crucial, and we need to keep working as hard as we can."

Winning captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni told the presenter, "There was something in the wicket to start with but as the game progressed there was low bounce but not much turn. It was hard work for the spinners and it was a fantastic effort from them. Even if you misjudged the flight you had time to adjust and not much carried to the slips. It was important not to give many runs."

Man of the Match Cheteshwar Pujara said, "The ball was coming nicely onto the bat. There was turn, but it was slow. As a team we knew we had to put up 500-plus and I had to hang around to play my role. In the second innings the ball was hard and I had a lot of confidence. I was out for almost a year and since I'm back I'm enjoying it."
