ABU DHABI (TheSportsNext) September 1, 2012:
The Australian team wore blackarm bands and also observed a minute silence on the boundary rope before the start of play against Pakistan on Friday. This was to mark respect for the five soldiers who were killed in Afghanistan yesterday.

"I just wanted to let you know that the Australian team will wear black armbands in respect of the passing of the five Australian soldiers in Afghanistan. We will also hold a minute silence on the boundary rope before the start of play", Matt Cenin the Cricket Australia media manager said exclusively minutes before the commencement of the game.

According to him, this may be the first instance when the players have decided to respect the death of soldiers.

"I don’t think this is something we’ve done in the past. Historically, black arm-bands have only been worn when a former Australian player has died or if someone close to one of the players or support staff has passed away", he further added.

Interestingly, the decision didn't involve the Australia's Embassy office in UAE. "The Embassy would not ask the Australian Cricket team to wear a black armband to mourn the 5 Australian soldiers killed in Afghanistan", Kamal Did, the Senior Researcher & Public Diplomacy Officer, Australian Embassy, Abu Dhabi said exclusively.

"We in Australia, are all shocked and saddened to learn about this terrible news of the death of our soldiers, during the performance of their noble duty in Afghanistan. However the decision of the Cricket team wearing a black armband or doing a two minute silence, as a gesture of mourning the death, is up to the team management and the match organizer.", he further added.

SHARJAH (TheSportsNext) August 28, 2012: Australian young fast bowler James Pattinson has already put his quality on show during initial overs in the first One Day International against Pakistan at Sharjah Stadium on Tuesday.

The right-arm fast bowler has gotten rid of Mohammad Hafeez and Azhar Ali within the first seven overs as Pakistan are struggling at 31 for 2 after seven overs.

The first to go was Mohammad Hafeez, who failed to capitalize on surviving an Umpire Decision Review System challenge by James Pattinson, as he scooped gently a dolly to David Hussey at Short Extra Cover position who kindly accepted it.

Azhar Ali, whose selection in the One-Day format is still under question by many cricket pundits, never looked settled and after edging a wider one from Mitchell Starc towards the thirdman boundary fell over a delivery in the next over by James Pattinson and lifted the ball towards the Mid-On fielder Mitchell Johnson who pouched it with the help of a slide.

After losing two genuine batsmen at total of 28 in the seventh over, a lot of responsibility is now on Nasir Jamshed’s shoulders who has scored 14 from 21 balls while promising Asad Shafiq has joined him.

SHARJAH (TheSportsNext) August 28, 2012: Pakistan have won the toss and decided to bat first in the first One Day International match against Australia at Sharjah International Cricket Stadium, Pakistan’s happy hunting ground over the years.

Pakistan captain Misbahul Haq has opted for not playing either Shoaib Malik or Junaid Khan but inclusion of Nasir Jamshed raises eyebrows as in presence of Kamran Akmal in the team, there was no real need of including an extra opening batsman in the playing eleven.

Pakistan team consists of Mohammad Hafeez, Kamran Akmal (wicketkeeper), Nasir Jamshed, Azhar Ali, Umar Akmal, Misbah-ul-Haq (captain), Asad Shafiq, Shahid Afridi, Sohail Tanvir, Saeed Ajmal, and Aizaz Cheema.

Australia have decided to go with all-pace bowling attack leaving behind Xavier Doherty and selected fast bowlers like James Pattinson, Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Johnson, and Dan Christian.

Australian playing eleven includes David Warner, Mathew Wade, Michael Clarke (captain), Mike Hussey, David Hussey, George Bailey, Glenn Maxwell, Dan Christian, Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc, and James Pattinson.
