SYDNEY, Australia (TheSportsNEXT) November 20, 2012: The Sydney Sixers, on Tuesday, terminated contract of Pakistan’s Twenty20 star player Umar Akmal after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) allowed the hard-hitting batsman to play only one match in the KFC Big Bash League.

However, world’s best off-spinner Saeed Ajmal will still represent the Adelaide Strikers in their opening match of the Australian T20 league.

The Sydney Sixers will commence the BBL campaign on December 8 against Sydney Thunder at the SCG.

The Sydney Sixers came up with the contract termination just a day after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) allowed the middle order aggressor to be part of the KFC Big Bash League 2012.

Stuart Clark, General Manager at Sydney Sixers, told reporters, “While it would have been great to have Umar Akmal here for the start of the BBL season, the short time frame offered is not in the club's best interest and we have decided to see if a suitable replacement is available rather than continue down this path”.

While the local media speculated about Sydney Sixers going after Kevin Pieteresen, Stuart Clark made it clear that the Sixers are not going to sign any foreign player just for the sake of having one in the squad.

He added, “We are confident our strong roster will be able to cover the loss of Umar should we not find a suitable replacement”.

KARACHI, Pakistan (TheSportsNEXT) November 19, 2012: After a request by the Cricket Australia, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday allowed three Pakistani cricketers Saeed Ajmal, Shahid Afridi, and Umar Akmal to enjoy a short stint at the KFC Big Bash League 2012.
-->

The permission will mean that the three top Pakistani cricketers will miss the final stages of the local Twenty20 tournament which runs in parallel with the Australian Twenty20 competition.

The decision is also to the contrary of the PCB’s earlier stance of saving its cricketers from injuries ahead of the all-important tour to India. PCB selectors will also be going through their previous statements where they had made it mandatory for the top cricketers to make sure their presence in the domestic T20 competition to be picked for the India tour.

The top quality trio will return home for the conditioning camp in Lahore for the India tour but will miss the major part of the country’s domestic Twenty20 competition.

It is important to mention here that Saeed Ajmal is associated with the Adelaide Strikers, Shahid Afridi signed up with Sydney Thunder after transferred from Melbourne Renegades, while Umar Akmal is due to represent the Sydney Sixers in the KFC Big Bash League 2012.

Talking to local media on Monday, a PCB spokesperson said that the decision was reversed after receiving a request by the Cricket Australian and the three Pakistani cricketers will miss the final stages of the local T20 tournament to be part of the KFC Big Bash League franchises for a brief period.

LAHORE, Pakistan (TheSportsNEXT) November 15, 2012: Team management of the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) decided to leave out one of the most talented middle-order batsman in the country, Umar Akmal, in the President’s Trophy cricket match against the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) on Wednesday.

Umar Akmal got infuriated by the move and not only left the ground with bitter taste in the mouth but also called a press conference against team managed especially coach Basit Ali.

All of the major newspapers in Pakistan published Umar Akmal’s press conference by adding more drama and agony into the story but nobody, including Umar Akmal, never tried to find out the actual reasons for his ouster.

Pakistani newspapers continued following the long-adopted policy of sensationalizing the popular story but none of them dug into the reasons and rationale behind leaving out such a talented player from a domestic cricket match.

A newspaper went on to the extent of false reporting that it quoted Basit Ali as suggesting Umar Akmal to play club cricket which was far from reality.

Such an unprofessional attitude of Pakistani media has brought a bad name for all the sports journalists in the global media as mostly none of the reporters investigate the real story rather they keep on following the popular trend and withstand the false story just in a bid to steal the limelight.

I spoke to former Pakistani batsman Basit Ali, who is now coach of the SNGPL cricket team, this morning at Gaddafi Stadium and he categorically denied the reported stories across the mainstream media which cited personal reasons for dropping Umar Akmal.

Basit Ali said that dropping Umar Akmal was not his personal decision rather it was decided by a five-man team management which included captain Misbah ul Haq and Mohammad Hafeez to keep him out of the team.

Some so-called sports website even reported that Mohammad Hafeez wanted Umar Akmal out of the team due to some personal grudges against him but such unreliable sources should be aware of the fact that Mohammad Hafeez is not the captain of SNGPL. Moreover, four seasons ago when Lahore’s cricket team didn’t want to take a risk by playing a young and inexperienced Umar Akmal in the First-Class Cricket, it was Mohammad Hafeez who took the challenge by letting him play in the SNGPL team. Umar Akmal responded brilliantly and came up with massive tallies of runs which paved the way for his inclusion in the Pakistan A team for the tour to Australia. Later, Umar Akmal got himself the chance to represent the national cricket team only after scoring two centuries for Pakistan A against Australia A and guess what Mohammad Hafeez was his captain during that tour.

Almost all the dailies claimed that Umar Akmal was left out of the side purely on the basis of poor form, which is once again a false claim.

How come form of a batsman deteriorates without even playing a match? If we recall the recent matches which Umar Akmal played for Pakistan we can clearly figure him out as one of the top performers for the Men in Green at the ICC World Twenty20 2012 which was held in Sri Lanka. Umar Akmal helped Pakistan win an impossible Super Eights match against South Africa and he was the last man standing in the Semi-Final match against Sri Lanka when all the other batsmen couldn’t take the responsibility.

During the two exhibition matches played between Pakistan Stars XI and International World XI at National Stadium in Karachi last month, Umar Akmal was amongst runs while he was once again playing match-winning innings when he toured Hong Kong for the Hong Kong Super Sixes tournament which Pakistan lost in the final.

During the course of the ongoing President’s Trophy, Umar Akmal has played one match against National Bank of Pakistan and even in that match he scored 40 runs in first innings and 48 runs in the second, therefore it is far from reality to suppose Umar Akmal is a victim of bad patch or poor batting form.

According to Basit Ali, the flamboyant middle-order batsman was left out of the side for the game against Pakistan International Airlines purely on the basis of team discipline violation.

“We dearly needed Umar Akmal for our match against Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited which was played from November 2-5. I kept calling Umar Akmal but he refrained from picking up any of my calls. Later he told team manager that he will let him know about his availability for the match in the night but he never contacted anyone. Now, the team doesn’t need his services therefore he has been left out of the playing eleven” Basit Ali told this scribe.

Basit Ali, who is also a great fan of Umar Akmal’s abilities as batsman and has been advocating his inclusion in the national team for a long time, made it clear that he never compromises on discipline.

Umar Akmal did arrive at the stadium on the morning of that match and asked Misbah ul Haq whether his name was in the playing eleven. Misbah told him that the team which played the last match will compete in this one. The reply infuriated Umar Akmal and he carried his cricket kit and went back home.

Umar Akmal is of the view that he opted out of the previous matches because he was busy in wedding preparations for his brother Adnan Akmal and when he wanted to be part of the squad, team management struck his name out of the playing eleven.

Umar Akmal’s elder brother, Kamran was also busy in the Mehndi arrangements of Adnan Akmal scheduled for November 6, but he still played the match played from November 2-5.

Basit Ali also raised the very question that when Kamran Akmal, who was also busy in the marriage arrangements, can play the match just a day before the ceremony, then why Umar Akmal can’t, especially when he was given the guarantee that he would be sent home through a flight right after the match?

There is no doubt that Umar Akmal is Pakistan’s best young batting talent and no other young batsman can match his exuberance and quality but despite of possessing such a high class it seems that Umar Akmal is not serious with his cricket career. While all the other batsmen are concentrating hard on improving their batting skill and with it their chances to grab a permanent position in the Pakistan cricket team, Umar Akmal is wasting his time in pinpointing other’s shortcomings and indulging himself into unnecessary controversies.

Umar Akmal, who began his Test career with a century in his first innings, was probably told right from the start that he is the next big thing in Pakistan cricket and is the future leader of the national cricket team. This prophecy by a former opening batsman and currently a television commentator has also tormented Umar Akmal’s career who considers himself as the biggest cricket in the country and has already started dreaming about captaincy.

However, captaincy is a thing that doesn’t come easy for anyone. Umar Akmal is not even part of Pakistan’s Test team where young batsmen like Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq have consistently performed to cement their places in the final eleven while Umar Akmal is not even participating in the all-important President’s Trophy which was a great chance for the middle-order batsman to prove his mettle against the best bowling talent in the country and pave the way for his return into the Test side.

It seems Umar Akmal has dropped the exclusive chance of winning back his Test spot by indulging himself into marriage arrangements of his brother.

Looking at what this brilliant cricketer is doing these days, one can easily comment that Umar Akmal is digging his own grave.

KARACHI, Pakistan (TheSportsNEXT) September 28, 2012: Amid sheer criticism, Umar Akmal and Umar Gul exhibited their class and strong nerves on Friday to help Pakistan stun high-flying South Africa by two wickets in their first Group 2 match of the ICC World Twenty20 2012 at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Needing 134 runs for victory, Pakistan were reduced to seven for 76 at one stage and looked down and out completely but Umar Akmal developed a 49-run match-winning partnership with fast bowler Umar Gul to steer Pakistan home in a thrilling fashion.

South African skipper AB de Villiers won the toss and decided to bat first in a bid to avoid Pakistani spinners in the second innings when the ball was due to offer more purchase and bite to the finger and wrist spinners.

However, Pakistani bowlers proved the decision wrong with some intriguing line and length during the initial stage of the South African innings as Richard Levi (8 from 9 – 1 four), Hashim Amla (6 from 6 – 1 four), and Jacques Kallis (12 from 18 – 1 six) all went back into the pavilion without doing much for their team.

JP Duminy (48 frp, 38 – 2 fours, 2 sixes) stepped up his game and rose to the occasion and along with Farhaan Behardien (18 from 21 – 2 fours) added crucial 38 runs for the fourth wicket before adding another 44 runs for the fifth wicket in company of skipper AB de Villiers (25 from 18- 2 fours, 1 six).

Albie Morkel (9 not out from 6 – 1 four) and Rob Peterson (3 from 4) then steered Proteas to a fighting total of 133 for six from their 20 overs.

Mohammad Hafeez looked under pressure as his captaincy failed to provide goods for Pakistan against South Africa. He failed to utilize full quota of the bowlers who were bowling well. Raza Hasan was used for only three overs despite of bowling a maiden over and going for only 12 runs from his three. Yasir Arafat should have been given another over as he had already taken two wickets for 25 runs from three overs. Umar Gul has simply lost his sheen in this WT20 as he once again was belted for 19 runs from his two overs, for a wicket though.

Pakistan’s spin trio was once again the star performers as Saeed Ajmal, Mohammad Hafeez, and Shahid Afridi collectively bowled 12 overs and went for only 75 runs for three wickets and if we add three overs bowled by Raza Hasan then the 15 overs between spinners cost Pakistan only 87 runs for three wickets.

Saeed Ajmal also bowled a maiden over during his spell as he took a wicket for 26 runs, Mohammad Hafeez captured two wickets for 23 runs from his four overs, while Shahid Afridi bowled miserly for 26 runs from his four.

At halfway stage, most of the cricketing pundits were favoring Pakistan over South Africans for their highly explosive batting talent but it went the other way as Pakistan soon found themselves into a ditch they dug for them.

Mohammad Hafeez (15 from 9 – 2 fours, 1 six), Imran Nazir (14 from 11 – 3 fours), Nasir Jamshed (Duck), and Kamran Akmal (1 from 6) have been the stars with the bat for Pakistan in the tournament but they all went back in the hut in the blink of an eye as Pakistan were languishing at 4/37 in the 7th over of their innings.

However, such low-scoring matches need only one partnership that proves enough to seal the deal and when Shoaib Malik (12 from 26 – 1 fours) and Umar Akmal (43 not out from 41 – 4 fours, 1 six) joined hands for the fifth wicket, it looked Pakistan have found the momentum back in their favor.

It wasn’t to be! Jacques Kallis struck with the ball and got rid of cool Shoaib Malik before JP Duminy got Shahid Afridi stumped for a first-ball duck and all-rounder Yasir Arafat (3 from 5) was soon undone by Dale Steyn and it all looked gloomy for Pakistan who were reduced to seven down for only 76 runs on the board in the 15th over, still 58 runs away from victory and having only 33 balls to do it.

Pakistan received the goods from someone nobody had even dreamt of. Umar Gul (32 from 17 – 2 fours, 3 sixes) decided to use long handle and he did it with good effect as he belted South African bowlers freely at will over different boundaries of the RPS as Pakistan clawed their way back into contention.

The pair of Umar Gul and Umar Akmal blasted 49 crucial runs for Pakistan from just 27 balls and when Dale Steyn finally managed to undo Umar Gul Pakistan was just 9 runs away from the victory and had an over to do it.

Umar Akmal blasted a massive six off the second ball of the final over by Morne Morkel who provided a gift to the explosive batsman in shape of a friendly full-toss which sailed over the boundary for the maximum. The rest was very much assured as Saeed Ajmal edged one down to third-man boundary for four off the fourth delivery of the over to seal victory for Pakistan in a tense encounter.

Dale Steyn was the most successful bowler for South Africa as he captured three wickets for 22 runs from his four overs. Morne Morkel proved the most expensive choice for AB de Villiers as the fast bowler went for 33 from his 3.4 overs. Rob Peterson has been a revelation for the South Africans as he once again bowled miserly for a couple of wickets as he gave away only 15 runs from his four overs which also included a maiden over. Surprisingly enough, Johan Botha was used for only two overs and he gave away only 10 runs for a wicket while JP Duminy took one wicket for five runs from his two overs.

Talking at the presentation ceremony, South African skipper AB de Villiers said, "I'm proud of the way we fought back. We lost it in the last five overs. Captaincy wise one or two errors there."

Pakistan skipper Mohammad Hafeez said, "We played couple of bad shots but great team effort. I knew that Gul could hit it hard. This is good sign that everybody is contributing. We did well to restrict them, in the end Pakistan was lucky to get this."

Umar Gul was named Man of the Match for his heroics with the bat, for a change though. He told the presentation party, "I must thank to my coach. I told Akmal that we should stay at the crease, the flick is my favourite shot."

SHARJAH (TheSportsNext) August 29, 2012: Fast bowlers Mitchell Starc and James Pattinson dealt the early blow while George Bailey and skipper Michael Clarke delivered the final punch as Australia defeated Pakistan by four wickets in the first One Day International at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

Mitchell Starc took five wickets, his best figures in One Day career, while Michael Clarke and George Bailey hit gutsy half centuries against Pakistani spin trio on a slow and low pitch in Sharjah as the match lived up to the expectations of a quality international cricket match.

This is the first time Australia have beaten Pakistan in a One Day International at Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Pakistani skipper Misbah ul Haq won the toss and decided to bat first but Aussie fast bowler James Pattinson delivered two early blows which hampered Pakistan’s progress early on.

Mitchell Starc soon joined his new ball partner and Pakistan clearly looked down the battle at three down for 40 runs on the board before skipper Misbah ul Haq (26) and Asad Shafiq (56) joined forces to added 59 valuable runs for the fourth wicket.

Misbah ul Haq played a reckless shot and lost his wicket to Dan Christian but incoming Umar Akmal (52) accepted the responsibility and together with Asad Shafiq added another 61 runs for the fifth wicket before poor shot selection during the Batting Powerplay overs made Pakistan dig their own grave.

Pakistan lost last six wickets for just 38 runs and couldn’t even last for full 50 overs as they were bowled out for 198 runs from 45.1 overs.

Mitchell Starc produced his best figures of ODI career as he captured five wickets for 42 runs while James Pattinson also played his part by taking three wickets for 19 runs. Mitchell Johnson received some stick from Asad Shafiq and Umar Akmal but still managed to grab a wicket for 43 runs.

Chasing a moderate target of 199 runs, Australia started in a cautious manner but Mohammad Hafeez once again proved his worth with an early wicket of dangerous David Warner (5) while Shahid Afridi got rid of Mathew Wade (10).

Saeed Ajmal soon got into the act and got rid of Hussey brothers. He sent Mike Hussey (5) back into the pavilion for his 100thwicket in One Day International career before deceiving David Hussey (3) with a doosra to leave Australia in a spot of bother at four for 67 runs.

However, Australian skipper Michael Clarke (66) joined hands with Australian Twenty20 skipper George Bailey (57 not out) for 54 runs partnership for fifth wicket before Mohammad Hafeez returned in the Batting Powerplay to trap Clarke right in front of the wicket.

Still needing 78 runs for victory, Glenn Maxwell (38) gave Bailey good bit of sport for a 63-run sixth wicket partnership before George Bailey decided to use the long handle and struck Aizaz Cheema for a hug six over Long Off to make life easier for the visiting team.

In the end Australia completed the target with 10 balls to spare for the loss of six wickets to register their first-ever victory over Pakistan in Sharjah.

Mitchell Starc was declared Man of the Match for his brilliant spell of 5/42.

The second One Day International between Pakistan and Australia will be played on August 31, 2012 at Abu Dhabi.

SHARJAH (TheSportsNext) August 28, 2012: Australian young fast bowler Mitchell Starc recorded his best figures in One Day International career on Tuesday as the so-called inexperience Australian side folded a somewhat experienced Pakistan team to mere 198 runs total in the first match being played at Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Pakistan looked good to score in excess of 260 runs at one stage when Asad Shafiq and Umar Akmal were blossoming with each ball but as soon as Mitchell Starc shattered stumps behind Asad Shafiq, Pakistan collapsed.

Pakistan’s last six wickets fell for only 38 runs as Aussie pacemen James Pattinson and Mitchell Starc caused havoc to Pakistan’s middle and lower middle order.

Mitchell Starc grabbed five wickets for 42 runs which is the 21st best bowling figures at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. The best bowling figure by any bowler at this stadium is by Muttiah Muralitharan of Sri Lanka who captured seven wickets for 30 runs against India on October 27, 2000. The best bowling figure by a Pakistani fast bowler here is by Aaqib Javed who took seven wickets for 37 runs against India on October 25, 1991. The best bowling figures by a Pakistani spin bowler at this ground is by Shahid Khan Afridi who grabbed five wickets for 35 runs from 9.2 overs against Sri Lanka on November 20, 2011.

Pakistan innings could never got going as right from the start James Pattinson put Pakistan under pressure. Pakistan Twenty20 captain Mohammad Hafeez was the first man to go who after surviving a Leg-Before-Wicket appeal due to Umpire Decision Review System (UDRS) couldn’t prolong his innings and was trapped by the combination of Pattinson and David Hussey for only four runs from 12 deliveries.

Azhar Ali once again failed to prove his worth in the One-day team as he chipped one straight to the throat of Mid-On (Mitchell Johnson) for only five runs from six balls.

Pakistan’s other opener, left-hand batsman Nasir Jamshed (23 from 30 – 3 fours) was looking good at the crease and started to move his feet well before Mitchell Starc bowled a beauty to get his knick straight to wicket keeper Mathew Wade who made no mistake in accepting the simple catch.

Pakistan were looking in a spot of bother and needed a special innings from skipper Misbah-ul-Haq (26 from 48 – 1 four) but he failed to provide the goods as he could only manage to add another 59 runs to the total in company of Asad Shafiq (56 from 77 – 2 fours, 2 sixes) who was looking settled and resilient.

Umar Akmal (52 from 55 – 2 fours, 2 sixes) then joined Asad Shafiq and the two young batsmen took the score to 160 runs in the 36thover before a huge batting collapse saw Pakistan folding to only 198 runs from 45.1 overs.

Once again it was Batting Powerplay which hurt Pakistan badly as Asad Shafiq trying to clear the infield was clean-bowled by Mitchell Starc for 56 runs.

Pakistan’s star all-rounder Shahid Afridi came and went in the space of only one delivery to score his 28th One Day International duck, which was also a record 12th Golden Duck for the fearful smasher.

Kamran Akmal, who never looked settled down the order, was bobbed down by some tight Aussie bowling before succumbing to pressure and edged one straight into the hands of Aussie skipper Michael Clarke for only four runs from 14 balls.

Umar Akmal (52) was the next man to go as he tried to lob the ball above point and cover fielder but found George Bailey who safely pouched the catch.

The rest was quite a formality as Pakistani tail-enders did their best to prolong the innings but Australian fast bowlers used reverse swing to great effect and skittled Pakistan to a paltry total of 198 runs.

James Pattinson took three wickets for 19 runs but star of the show was Mitchell Starc who captured five wickets for 42 runs which is his best figures in One-day career.
