KARACHI (TheSportsNext) September 4, 2012: Six Pakistani cricketers who took part in the recently concluded One Day International series against Australia returned home on Tuesday night.

Australia defeated Pakistan by 2-1 in the three-match ODI series which has resulted a huge uproar in the cricketing circles as Pakistan still lost the series despite of preparing the spinners-friendly pitches which gave the home team a massive advantage over the visitors.

The six cricketers who landed at Lahore airport last night included Captain Misbah ul Haq, Imran Farhat, Azhar Ali, Anwar Ali, Aizaz Cheema and Junaid Khan.

VICTORIA, Australia (TheSportsNext) September 4, 2012: Glenn Maxwell has played four matches for Australia, all One Day Internationals, one against Afghanistan a bit over a week ago and three others in the recently completed series against Pakistan over the past week.

In his first match, against Afghanistan, he scored 2(6) batting at number 4, in an innings that ultimately didn't really matter as Australia won easily. He then bowled 5 overs, with 2 maidens, and still went for 21 runs. A decent economy rate, slightly better than the average in the match, but a pretty poor return.

In his second match, and his first against a top country, Pakistan, he first bowled 4 overs for 27 without taking a wicket, a very expensive effort, then chipped in with a virtually match winning 38 off 38, batting at number 7, a very good score and scoring rate, chasing 199 to win.

In his third match, he scored 28 off 27 batting first to help to set a score of 248, then failed to defend it as he conceded a massive 37 runs off his 4.4 overs.

In his fourth match, he bowled 7 overs, conceding a more respectable 33 runs, slightly better than the average for the innings, before scoring a match winning 56 not out off 38 balls, especially useful as he kept going after Michael Hussey got out, and in spite of Christian falling.

So, to put it simply - in 2 out of 4 matches his bowling stunk so badly that it went a long way towards costing the team the match, and he was unable to bowl close to his required overs. In the other 2 matches, while he didn't get a wicket, at least he didn't concede too much. In 4 bowling innings he bowled a grand total of 20.4 overs, averaging 5 overs and 1 ball per innings - nowhere near good enough as an all rounder. He conceded a massive 118 runs without a wicket, at a very high economy of 5.70 per over - not good enough.

Or, to put it another way - he shouldn't bowl.

The question is - is he good enough to play purely as a batsman?

While he failed in the one off match against Afghanistan, in his three matches against the top flight side (and very good bowling side) Pakistan he scored 38(38), 28(27) and 56*(38), some very good returns, especially considering that the team totals were only 199, 248 and 250. In other words, his scoring rate was significantly higher than the average player in the team. While his scores weren't huge, they were nonetheless enough to make a positive difference.

But as a batsman he would be borderline. Yes, he scores quickly, but no he doesn't score enough runs.

It reminds me of Shane Lee, Brett Lee's older brother, who was such a great batsman but terrible bowler, who struck at very quick strike rates but didn't score very big scores too often.

But Mark Waugh also started out in similar fashion - only to move up the order and start scoring heavily - and his bowling improved too.

The problem with Maxwell is that his first class record, where he averages 36.96 in first class and 50.66 in List A as a bowler, suggests that he is nowhere near a good enough bowler to play as an all rounder.

And surely Steve O'Keefe or Steve Smith would be better - both better bowlers and both big strikers who would be better.

The Maxwell experiment is a surprise but perhaps he can do better than expected in the 2012 ICC World T20. We will soon find out!

KARACHI (TheSportsNext) September 4, 2012: Australia showed better nerves to defeat Pakistan by three wickets to clinch the three-match One Day International series by 2-1, thanks to a brilliant unbeaten half century by all-rounder Glenn Maxwell at Sharjah Cricket Ground on late Monday.

Australian skipper Michael Clarke won the toss and asked Pakistan to bat first as he was afraid of bowling with a wet ball in the evening which proved costly the other evening.

Pakistani opening pair right-hand batsman Mohammad Hafeez (78 from 97 – 4 fours, 2 sixes) and left-hand batsman Nasir Jamshed (48 from 75 – 6 fours) got the home team off to a solid start with a 129-run partnership from just 159 balls thus establishing a perfect launch-pad for the strong hitters in the middle order.

However, once the opening partnership was broken, Pakistan started digging their own grave as a promising decision by skipper Misbah-ul-Haq to promote “all-rounder” Shahid Afridi (7 from 6 – 1 four) at one-down position actually backfired.

Shahid Afridi never looked comfortable gripping his bat and once again Pakistani top cricketers kept hiding their injuries to make sure they don’t lose their place in the team.

Asad Shafiq (27 from 35 – 1 four) then joined Mohammad Hafeez but this time it was the right-hand opening batsman’s turn to leave the crease as Pakistan slipped from 0/129 to 3/155 from 32.2 overs.

Pakistan still had several weapons in their armor as skipper Misbah ul Haq (25 from 39) joined forces with Asad Shafiq to ease off things a little bit but once again skipper took too many balls to score his runs without hitting even a single boundary.

Their slow progress put the lower order under tremendous pressure as Umar Akmal (Duck) and his brother Kamran Akmal (2 from 3) never helped the cause and in the end a lone fight by Azhar Ali (27 not out from 30 – 2 fours) helped Pakistan to a reasonable total of 244 for seven from their 50 overs.

Left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc was once again the star performer for the Aussies with the ball as he captured four wickets for 51 runs while Mitchell Johnson (9-0-33-2), for the first time in the series, looked impressive. Skipper Michael Clarke also took a wicket during his 12-ball spell for only three runs.

Australia needed a good start in chase of a good target and their openers David Warner (21 from 33 – 3 fours, 1 six) and David Hussey (43 from 45 – 3 sixes) manhandled the only Pakistani pacer in the lineup, Junaid Khan in his initial overs.

Australia raced to 44 in the ninth over when left-arm off-spinner Abdur Rehman got rid of Warner who tried to hit him out of the park but ended up in safe hands of Shoaib Malik.

Australian captain Michael Clarke (32 from 34 – 4 fours) kept the momentum going for his side as he managed to add another 44 runs for the second wicket from 50 balls as only when things started slipping in the tourists’ way, Saeed Ajmal got into the act and got rid of Aussie skipper as well as David Hussey and dangerous George Bailey (1 from 6).

Saeed Ajmal came at a striking distance of picking up his old rival Mike Hussey, on naught, with a doosra as the ball hit Mr. Reliable right in front of the stumps but Billy Bowden thought the otherwise and Pakistani cricketers found little confidence to challenge the decision thus offering the dangerous batsman a crucial reprieve.

Mike Hussey went on to score 65 runs from 72 balls hitting seven boundaries and a six to make the run-chase viable for the Aussies with 51-run partnership for the fifth wicket in company of Mathew Wade (22 from 46 – 1 four).

When Junaid Khan dismantled furniture behind Mike Hussey, the Aussie had already done enough damage to hand the task to young all-rounder Glenn Maxwell (56 not out from 38 – 4 fours, 3 sixes) who used his big-hitting talent to help Australia get the target with 18 balls to spare.

Pakistani fielding remained sloppy and Kamran Akmal once again proved too sticky as he missed an easy chance to stump Mathew Wade off Azhar Ali. In the crucial stage of the match, Azhar Ali dropped Glenn Maxwell which proved too costly in the context of the game.

In the end, Australia won the third and final One Day International by three wickets to clinch a narrowly-contested series.

Saeed Ajmal has been the real challenge for the Aussies in the series and once again he was the top bowler for Pakistan as he captured three wickets for 37 runs. Shahid Afridi showed big heart to bowl his 10 overs despite of an injury to his left-hand but his effort made no impact as he proved too expensive and leaked 62 runs from his quota. Junaid Khan also proved an expensive option for Pakistan as he gave away 42 runs from his six overs for two wickets while Abdur Rehman captured two wickets for 42 runs.

Mike Hussey was declared Man of the Match for his 65 runs while Mitchell Starc was named Man of the Series for his 13 wickets in three matches.

Talking at the prize distribution ceremony, Australian skipper Michael Clarke said, "Can't have been prouder of the guys. Maxwell is a wonderful talent, today is a great example of a team performance. The bowlers got us back after they were 100 for none. To be able to chase those runs against that attack is special. Starc has had a good series, he has hit the wicket hard, bowled with good pace. I don't want to take anything away from the other bowlers."

Pakistani captain Misbah-ul-Haq was of the view, "The way we started, 15-20 runs short at the end. Credit to Australia the way they chased. Wasn't easy! Little bit of dew factor, outfield was also quicker in the second part of the game. Nasir Jamshed had a wonderful series, Shafiq and Azhar were positives, bowlers bowled well. I think after the game you can say we should have done this and that. All the time when we lose the game it is like this. Other bowlers are also wicket-takers. Probably, in hindsight, if I had continued with him [Ajmal], it could have been a different result."

Man of the Series Mitchell Starc said, "It has been warm, sweaty and the dew factor as well. We wanted to come out and perform rather than just keep talking. Overall it has been a good tour."

Man of the Match Mike Hussey said, "It [heat] was not as bad as the last game in Abu Dhabi but it was still quite oppressive. Fantastic innings from Maxwell! To hit the ball like that on a pitch where the ball was dying was something. They have some great spinners. It is a very satisfying victory. It is up there among the toughest places to play cricket. No point complaining. It is the same for both teams."

KARACHI (TheSportsNext) September 3, 2012: Pakistan’s team management has decided to make star all-rounder Shahid Khan Afridi part of the playing eleven in the third and final One Day International match against Australia to be played on Monday.

Sources told this scribe that the team management, after getting assured of fitness of the former captain, made the decision and Shahid Afridi will replace the left-arm fast bower Sohail Tanvir, who has failed to prove his worth in the playing eleven.

It is important to mention here that Shahid Afridi didn’t play the second One Day International against Australia after getting injured during the net practice session prior to that match.

Interestingly, Pakistan looked a different side in the second match and outplayed Australia completely by winning the match in a professional fashion by seven wickets.

After losing the first match of the series, captain Misbah ul Haq had criticized the lower middle order for not putting up a great show with the bat which gave hints of something fishy in the Pakistani team and it would be interesting to see how Pakistan look on the field in the final encounter of the three-match series tonight.

KARACHI (TheSportsNext) September 2, 2012: Known for creating one controversy after another, Pakistan’s former skipper and talented leg-spin bowler Shahid Khan Afridi sparked yet another storm in Pakistan cricket on Sunday when his latest media stunt infuriated the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) authorities, sources told TheSportsNext.com on Sunday.

Shahid Afridi told local media news channel the other day that he will play the third and final One Day International. Boom Boom Afridi was not part of Pakistan’s seven-wicket victory over Australia in the second One Day International after attracting an injury when he dived in a bid to stop a shot during net practice session in Abu Dhabi.

Sources told this scribe that the PCB authorities, who already don’t like Shahid Afridi and his anti-team unity attitude were deeply irked by the latest statements of Shahid Afridi and are of the view that the former skipper has violated the cricket board’s code of conduct and he will have to answer for this.

"We were surprised that how can Shahid Afridi give a media statement without getting permission especially in the mid of a series. We know that Afridi is habitual to violating the PCB rules but we can't bear such irresponsible behavior any longer”.

When asked that Afridi may have asked manager before talking to media, the sources stated, “We will ask the team management too but I don't think so that team manager gave him permission for a media stunt. It’s totally team’s internal issue about his fitness and only coach or team manager can give an official statement about it".

Sources further elaborated that as per the PCB code of conduct no player is allowed to speak to media persons in the middle of a series without prior permission of the team management of the cricket board officials.

It is important to mention here that before Shahid Afridi talked to that reporter about his chances of playing in the final match, the team manager had already told media persons who were covering the practice session that Afridi did participate in the net session but “we will check on his fitness before the match and a final decision about his inclusion in the team will be made only after the fitness test”.

After few minutes of the manager’s statement, a local TV channel claimed that Shahid Afridi has confirmed that he was feeling better and will be playing the final ODI against Australia in Dubai.

Sources in the PCB further stated, "We are looking into this matter and if Afridi has violated the code of conduct, he will have to answer for his folly. He is the most senior player in the national team and if we spare him for such acts then it will set a bad example for the junior cricketers in the team”.

It is merit mentioning here that vast majority of the PCB’s think-tank is not happy with Shahid Afridi in the national team and they usually complain about BoomBoom’s acts to the PCB chairman Chaudhry Zaka Ashraf and the all-rounder’s habit of leaking internal news to his friends in the media are the biggest point of concern for the PCB officials.

KARACHI (TheSportsNext) September 2, 2012: After defeating Australia by seven wickets in the second One Day International at Abu Dhabi on Saturday early morning, Pakistani cricketers left for Dubai in the afternoon to take on the Aussies in the third and final match of the series to be held on September 3-4, 2012.

Sources told this scribe that a decision on whether former skipper Shahid Khan Afridi will be part of the Pakistani playing eleven in the third ODI or not will be taken on Sunday after the team’s net session.

Shahid Afridi had received injury during a practice session ahead of the second ODI when he dived while catching a ball during fielding drills. Thereafter, left-arm fast bowler Junaid Khan made it to the final eleven and impressed many with his disciplined bowling.

On Saturday, Pakistani team management made players to have an off day before returning to nets on Sunday to get ready for the final ODI.

The three-match One Day International series is tied 1-1 after Australia defeated Pakistan in the opening match by four wickets in Sharjah before Pakistan leveled the series with a seven-wicket victory in Abu Dhabi.
